Product Description

The Glow-worm Energy Regular 18kW Gas Boiler is an efficient boiler that can be wall-mounted and is small enough to be housed inside a kitchen cabinet or cupboard.

It is ErP A-rated for heating and hot water, which means it has a low energy consumption to help cut the cost of your energy bills.

With this being a regular (conventional/heat only) boiler, you need to factor in that it also requires a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank.

How does a regular boiler work?

A regular boiler, also referred to as heat only or conventional boiler, requires the use of a hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank – usually installed in the loft.

The cold water from the tank gets heated up by the heat exchanger in the boiler and is transferred to the hot water cylinder, where it stays warm for several hours. When you turn on a hot tap, the water from the cylinder is used to provide hot water, or directed to your radiators when you turn need central heating.

What is the difference between a regular boiler and system boiler?

It is easy to confuse regular and system boilers as they both require the use of a hot water cylinder to store hot water for central heating and domestic hot water. Where they differ, however, is in the fact that a regular boiler runs off water provided by a cold water storage tank and a system boiler is connected to the mains water supply.

How long will it take to install?

If you are replacing a regular boiler then it makes a huge amount of sense to install a new regular boiler as you will already have the hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank set up. The installation time and cost will be low as no additional fittings or pipework need to be put in place. Typically, it will take an engineer 4-6 hours to install.

If you have no heating system in your home or you are replacing a combi boiler, then there will be much more work involved. A cold water storage tank will need to be installed, usually in the loft, as well as the hot water cylinder. Pipework will also need to be fitted to connect the two tanks to the boiler.

Is it suitable for my home?

If you already have a regular boiler, then you will already have a hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank installed. If not, you need to work out if you have sufficient space to house them. The cold tank will usually be fitted in the loft, so you need to make sure you have room and that the loft is properly boarded out.

One of the major benefits in choosing a regular boiler over a combi is that some combi boilers are unable to cope with high demands for hot water e.g. running another tap when someone is having a shower. With a regular boiler the hot water is already stored in the hot water cylinder. It can be delivered throughout the house to wherever the demand is until the cylinder needs refilling.

If you have a property that has a lot of demand for hot water and you have the space for the cylinder and tank, a regular boiler is a very good choice. The Glow-worm Energy Regular 18kW boiler has a heat output of 18kW and a domestic hot water flow rate of 10.4l/min, which is suitable for small to medium sized homes.

Are other options available?

There are five different models in the Glow-worm Energy range: 12kW, 15kW, 18kW, 25kW and 30kW. The smaller output models are more suitable for homes that have a smaller demand for hot water, whilst the 25kW and 30kW models are better for large homes with more radiators and bathrooms.

What are the dimensions of the boiler?

This boiler’s dimensions are H600xW375x280. The compact size and option to be wall-mounted means it can be fitted inside a kitchen cabinet or hall cupboard so it is not on show. The Energy Regular 18kW boiler also only weighs 22kg, making it very easy for an engineer to pick up and install.

What fuel supply does it need?

The Glow-worm Energy Regular 18kW Gas Boiler runs off natural gas and needs to be connected to the main gas supply.

How much does the Glow-worm Energy Regular 18kW Gas Boiler cost?

The boiler retails for roughly £850 (inc Vat), plus the cost of additional fittings, such as the horizontal flue. If you don’t have a hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank, then you also need to factor in the cost of these purchases. There are lots of options available, but on average you can expect to pay £200-400 for a hot water cylinder and between £100-200 for a cold water tank.

The installation costs will depend on what type of boiler you currently have that you are replacing. If you already have a regular boiler, it’s a straightforward job to swap out the old model and install the Glow-worm Energy. Typically, this will cost between £500-£1,000.

If you have a combi boiler or don’t have any heating system at all, then the installation time will be longer and the cost higher. As well as fitting the new boiler, an engineer will need to install the hot water cylinder, cold water storage tank and any necessary pipework. Costs can range between £1,000 – £2,500 depending on how much pipework and labour is required.

Is this boiler a good purchase?

The Glow-worm Energy Regular 18kW Gas Boiler is an affordable and efficient boiler, which is also compact enough to be hidden out of sight. If you are replacing a traditional heating system, this boiler can be installed with a minimum amount of fuss and disruption.

It’s also a great option if you have a high demand for hot water in your home and your combi boiler is not able to keep up with the supply.

What is the warranty period?

The Glow-worm Energy Regular 18kW Gas Boiler has a free 7 year parts and labour warranty, with the option to extend this to a whopping 15 years if your installer is registered with Glow-worm’s Club Energy loyalty scheme.

Does it need annual servicing?

All boilers should have an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer to ensure they are working efficiently and there are no faults or issues. An engineer can spot lots of common problems straight away, such as leaks, poor performance, or strange noises.

At the annual service, an engineer will check the outside and inside of the boiler, investigate the pressure and listen to it firing up to make sure it is working correctly.

By diagnosing an issue early and getting it fixed it improves the efficiency of the boiler, cuts down your energy bills, and saves you from having to fork out for a costly replacement later down the line.

If you take advantage of this boiler’s 7-year free warranty, then it is also a requirement to have an annual service carried out by a Gas Safe engineer.
